Recycling : It’s a Little Inconvenient, But …

14 June 201113 Comments

I do sometimes wish that we have recycling bins more conveniently located at our apartment block, ie. At our lift lobby downstairs or something.

So that we don’t have to stack recyclables (in bags and bags) inside our home and carry them all over to the bins located ‘nearby’.

(I think they’re about … 100m away from our block. Errr, I’m bad with calculating distances).

I know. I could’ve just thrown those recyclables to the ‘usual rubbish bins’. But then I honestly would’ve felt … guilty. For NOT recycling them.

Then, you would probably say, I should’ve just taken that walk to the recycling bins every other day, or whenever I’ve filled up one plastic bag or something.

But errr, I’m honestly too lazy to do that.

The recycling bins near our block are cleared just once a week (every Friday, according to the sign), and they are shared by 3-4 surrounding blocks, I think.

Sometimes I see rather empty bins.

Sometimes they’re so full that people just leave their bags of recyclables near the bins.

And looking at all this does make me wonder : Do households generally still recycle these days?

And, if the government made recycling bins more readily accessible at public housings, would people be more inclined to recycle if they haven’t been doing so before?

What do you think?

    Hi Leon,

Well we have been listening to so much of the government excuses, until don’t know what is interesting;)

    Love,

ci leonny, I pray for a day when the hdb rubbish chute, once opened, will offer 3-4 different compartments. especially for a country as advanced & regulated & carefully planned as singapore, I’m surprised that household recycling is still very ‘backdated’.

    • Leonny says:

hehe… aku pernah terpikir ini juga, … how nice it’d be if they have this kind of system one day. Tapiii … ya, keliatannya bisa 10-20 thn lagi baru ada kaya gitu kali ya =) not quite ‘worth’ the investment just yet?

Oh my goodness I know what u mean! I’d feel guilty if I don’t recycle too. Before I was married, the govt used to give us yellow recycling bags at my mum’s house, which we would put our recyclables in it. They would then come once a month to collect the yellow bags so we don’t even have to walk. Not sure why they don’t have it in other areas though.. (my mum stays at tiong bahru btw)

      Hi Madeline

(so sorry for the super late reply! Just installed this ‘comment thread’ thingy, which makes replying to comments so much easier for me now! =)

They used to give out blue coloured recycling bags too to our neighbourhood… Haven’t seen those for some time though.

    • Leonny says:

Sempet liat sih yang cash for trash gitu deket market, ga terlalu jauh dari rumah. Mesti kesana pas minggu gitu, tapi … minggu pagi itu waktunya aku nyantai, ga mau kemana-mana biasanya, hehe …

Yes – I would love to have the Recycle bins close to me. The nearest bin is at the MRT station. Oh my god. However, according to Town Council, they dare not place near our void deck is because of Vandalism. Argh…

    • Leonny says:

Oh .. due to vandalism and they don’t want to place any recycling bins in the neighbourhood? That’s an interesting ‘excuse’, isn’t it …

To me, it’s like someone not wanting to buy a bike for his kid for fear of the bike being scratched/dented. The benefits of having it should ‘outweigh’ the potential damages that could happen to it, shouldn’t it?

I also recycle my rubbish regularly and usually sort them out into 3 categories, “metal”, “paper” and “glass”. Thankfully my recyclables are collected from my flat on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month. I thought every HDB flat has this service? Do you receive a light yellow or green plastic bag at your door-step every once a while? If yes, do notice that these plastic bags have dates written on them and all you need to do is to out your recyclables in these bags and place them outside your flat on the designated dates. I’ll suggest that you drop an email to your town council regarding to this matter and they should get back to you promptly. In fact, you can even lobby for a recycling bin closer to your flat!

    • Leonny says:

      Hi hi …

(so sorry for the super late reply btw)

Yes we used to receive blue coloured recycling bags … but somehow I don’t see them anymore in the past months. Writing to the town council to suggest having more recycling bins around the neighbourhood is a good idea though! Thanks =)

  • Lacy says:

Really appreciate your efforts to recycle.like you said if they start keeping the recycling bin in an accessible distance then it would be more convenient instead of accumulating the bottles n papers in so many bags and searching each and every block to find one. To be honest I have no clue where these bins are kept near my block. Now your urging me to go and look.he he.
