Anya’s First Day of Kindergarten

7 January 200910 Comments

it’s the beginning of another school year for almost all preschoolers here in Singapore, and today Anya officially started her Kindergarten class!

It all went well today. Phew. Definitely nothing like last year, where her desperate cries for Mommy echoed throughout the school! Glad she’s enjoying her class too.

And Vai, he seemed happy to send her sister off, pick her after school and play at the school playground. Didn’t bring along our stroller today, and he walked throughout AND very rarely asked to be carried. I’m impressed.

Happily left school together with their little friend, Elissa, who’s started her nursery there too.

How was your kid’s first day at school?

Vai mmg the outgoing type and tipe bisa cuek and silly, tapi somehow kalo harus gua tinggal, kebanyakan ga mau.

Kalo mmg fruitful dan JL picks up a lot from there dlm byk aspect dan financially lu ok jg utk dia ambil kelas itu, then gua rasa it’s ok. (1 term = 10mg yah? artinya $13.50 per 3 hour session yah … )

Dulu sih Anya kaga ikut kelas2 gitu .. dan no plans juga untuk Vai so far. Will wait till next year for our family’s case …

My opinion ajah yah Sis …

    Sze Yi :

Sure is interesting to see how kids react to the idea of going to school. Some parents shared how their kids totally are okay on the 1st day, even asked for it again. Some completely cling on to the parents and go through tough separation anxiety situations.

I think all kids will be okay in the end, but ‘how long it’ll take’ for them to happily accept the fact they’re going to school will differ from one kid to another.

It’ll sure be interesting to see how Vai reacts on his 1st day of school next January!

  • sze yi says:

ya right, become playing time instead huh…
but he seems to be the only one reacting this way!
sure hope he can overcome this soon…

yes, mine does react the same as Vai, can go astray at one point but super clingy at another!
does all aug bb react this way?! ^__^

  • Siska says:

funny huh? i mean vai’s case. he seems to be very outgoing type of kid and doesn’t look like the clingy kid who has separation anxiety problem. and like you said, he is okay when you are out of his sight when he chooses to go astray but not wanting you to leave him in sunday school. hmm… kenapa yah bisa gitu? gw selalu pikir vai tuh spt JL (personality dan karakternya).

gw taon lalu enrol JL utk attend taon ini punya activity group utk umur 3+. tp kayaknya gw mo batalin deh. JL sih seneng bgt mo sekolah. tiap kali lewat depan skolah, pasti bilang dia mo sekolah. gw selalu bilang iya minggu depan, tp minggu dpn ga pernah dateng, krn gw males. soalnya cuma 2 jam doang. nah yg activity grp ini 3 jam sih, cuma seminggu sekali doang, dan ikut jadwal sekolah disini, klu school holiday, ikutan liburan jg. trus blm lagi klu lagi sial kepotong public holiday. alasan gw mo batalin cuma krn merasa sayang aja $$nya. 1 term $135. cuma 3 jam seminggu. mnt lu, gimana yah, Le? masukin apa kaga?

    Siska :

Schools here start right at the beginning of the year, and yes, I think OZ schools have longer ‘holidays’ overall than here in SG ๐Ÿ™‚

    ………………………………………………………………………………….

    Sandra :

I too think it’s not yet time for Vai to start a 3-hours/day, 5days/week school.

And though by now Anya can read relatively well for a 4yo, I still think those who start their academic life ‘later’ doesn’t necessarily mean they will be less ‘capable’ later in life. I feel kids here – including Anya – are not getting enough ‘creative play’ and ‘social play’ at school.

Funny ya how Tobias has no problems leaving you (when attends school etc). But how about cases where you have to leave him ?

Because I notice so far, for Vai’s case, when he’s the one who chooses to ‘go astray’, he can happily do so, BUT when I’m the one who needs to leave him (eg. for him to attend his sunday school without me accompanying him in class), he’d desperately ask for me NOT to leave. He becomes very clingy and will scream and cry for one of us to be with him (even though he’s in a familiar surrounding).

    ………………………………………………………………………………….

    Shuey :

Yes, kids here in SG do start their ‘academics life’ very very early don’t they?

For our case, we let Vai start school (N2) only next year.

    ………………………………………………………………………………….

    Sze Yi :

Uh oh, sounds like your son associates his playgroup as play-time ya … but then perhaps it is a normal reaction, coming from someone who’s just turned two ?

Btw, he’s also an August 2006 baby yah ? Similar to Vai then ๐Ÿ™‚

  • sze yi says:

i did send my son (who just turned 2 last aug) to a 2 hrs playgroup. but he is not coping well, my mother said keeps crying each time if toys are been kept and not willingly to follow the grp when the music is played.
i was wondering if i shld send him to the same CC with my elder daughter who is now in K2.

  • shuey says:

Both my hubby and myself did not manage to enroll my son into the playgroup we prefer(he’s turning to two in March). As the seats in the desired playgroup(nearest to my in-law’s place and our 1st preference) have been fully taken up and we thought going to play group at 2 is not so essential though everyone else in Singapore is sending their kids to school (or play group) at the early stage.

  • Sandra says:

Well, here in Switzerland Kindi does not start till the kid is 4yrs old & even then there is a cut-off date – if Tobias had wanted to start in Aug2008, he would have to be 4 by 30th Apr2008 – which he was not – missed by 20x days. So now he will start Kindi when he is 5 – making him one of the oldest in his class when he does start. But it’s ok – we prefer the slower academic life here – besides he is not ready for a ‘real’ class yet. He does go to a sort of daycare as well as pre-school – never had a problem leaving me – ever… makes me just a tiny bit sad – sigh!

  • Siska says:

skolah udah mulai lagi? cepet yah liburan lewat… disini msh school holiday. perasaan disini mah kebanyakan liburnya deh dibanding sekolahnya. rugi nih kita yg bayar uang sekolah, dikorting liburan, hehehe
