Making : Love Owls using Used Cardboard

11 May 20152 Comments

When it comes to arts and crafts, I prefer to use recyclables, whenever it is possible.

This was what Anya did too for her school’s art project recently.

Students were asked to make something, and it could be anything.

And so she decided to make two owls, using a used cardboard box we got from a supermarket.

What she did was:

1. Cut the cardboard into strips of about 2cm wide.

2. Slowly pull out the side of the cardboard box so it reveals the inside’s ‘uneven’ surface (pictured below).

3. Roll the cardboard strip

4. Make one ‘thicker roll’ and two ‘smaller rolls’. The thicker roll is the body, while the two smaller rolls are the owl’s eyes.

5. Paint the body of the owls. Anya made two owls, and so she used 2 different colours (she used acrylic paint)

As for the rest of the craft, … please refer to the picture below.

That’s what her craft looked like =)

Oh btw, we collected some dry twigs by the street, and incorporated them into the final craft (the owls ‘sit’ on the twigs).

Plus, ‘leaves’ were added too, to add a little more colour to the craft.

(Used the cardboard for the leaves too)

There you go!

Love owls.

Cute, I thought =D

Hi Leonny. I just started reading your blog recently and especially interested in the arts & crafts activities you have done with your kids. The ideas are very creative, simple and interesting. I really like the idea of using recycled materials to make all these crafts. I know an organisation in Malaysia called Biji-Biji is doing similar stuff. They are conducting workshops for children and teach them about up-cycling. Just thought you may be interested to know and here is the link for you to check it out: http://biji-biji.myshopify.com/pages/arts-craft#tab_6

Maybe it will give you some more ideas for your future projects with your kids. Talking about ideas, I am just wondering how do you get all these ideas to create these interesting little projects with your kids? With all the distractions (smartphones, tv, tablets), how do you make the project interesting and make sure that the kids are interested in doing it? I am pretty sure there are some challenges for you to keep them engage at the early stage, right?

I know it is really long for a comment, sorry about that. I will definitely share your blog with my colleague, they will definitely be interested and even inspired by your blog.

    Thanks a lot.

      Hi Neow,

Thanks for stopping over and sharing the link! Went to it but will browse through for ideas! =D

As for ideas, I guess it’s through seeing what we have around us, and from browsing around, seeing ideas from others and adjusting the ideas to what we have at home =)

Kids are basically keen on doing such things if we also spend time with them? As for smartphones / TV, we have habits anyway that we instill in our family, ie. Limited playtime on smartphones/tablets when responsibilities are all done, the kids don’t have phones of their own (don’t need too anyway at the moment), and TV time has its limits too, and it doesn’t have to be ‘everyday’. The point that we’re sending is, we need to be able to enjoy many other things in life, and flat screens are just one of them =)

Anyway, thanks for sharing my blog with your colleagues. It’ll be wonderful if it can be useful and inspiring to others.

      Take care … Cheers!
