Coming up : ‘Photography Tips’ posts
I get people writing and asking, what kind of cameras do I use? And whether I can share photography tips and tricks on my site from time to time.
So far I hardly ever write anything on this topic because, I just feel I know so very little about ‘photography technicalities’.
I’ve never taken any formal photography classes. And while some people find the ‘technical’ aspects of photography really easy to remember, I’m somehow just bad with it. Stuff like manual settings and aperture. Such ‘technical knowledge’ somehow can’t stick in my head too well, and I seriously don’t know why. My husband finds it weird too that I can hardly remember / digest anything technical that he’s told me a few times before.
But. I love taking photos. Very much like a passion. I’m one of those people who treasure moments.
When friends get together, when kids laugh out loud and have fun, when babies are asleep and gently carried by their moms.
I shoot and I capture moments.
And I guess that explains why I mostly take photos with people I know in them. Or of things that have deeper meanings to it that I’d like to keep or I’d like to share with others later.
I enjoy looking at great photos taken by other people too. I find them refreshing!
And recently somehow I feel I should perhaps share something, every now and then, on photography with other people through my site. Like, the kinds of considerations or approach I tend to keep in mind when I take photos. Or perhaps, share a great photography site.
Anyway, I’ll post one real soon.

I often use the ‘auto setting’! And though I sometimes do fiddle with the manual setting, I’m still sort of guessing and trying things out! I mean, it’s not really because I ‘fully understand’ how the setting should be to achieve the kind of look I want! I then do the rest of the work – to get the kind of look and feel I want – in photoshop … which I also self-learn.

For our case, we have an external hard drive (Maxtor) with a capacity of close to 300GB. My photos, along with my other documents, are stored there.
My husband who knows this stuff much better than me says that it is somewhat ‘safer’ and ‘more convenient’ this way. The external hard drive is portable, and won’t ‘crash’ together with my PC (if my computer happens to crash).
Before we got this external hard drive, I backed up the photos and stored them in DVDs. And I have quite a stack of them!
But really, when it comes to data storage, I think we can’t really be 100% safe (well, unless you have like, 3 hard drives or something). DVDs can be spoiled too. Anything could happen, but somehow I think having a blog also sort of helps in ‘storing’ little bits of our photos ‘online’! 🙂
As for organising my photos:
– I keep two separate folders for the two cameras I use
– Then for each one, I keep sub-folders according to year, month and date and write brief description of what’s contained in the folder for easier identification in the future
eg. 2008> Oct08> 28oct – Anya ballet, making balloon man

Wakakak…ternyata gua ngga sendirian..gua juga susah banget utk digest the word “aperture” in my brain..gua sdh coba baca berkali-kali tp masih kagak ngerti until I got so frustrated..I end up don’t care abt it anymore & just use the “auto” function in my camera..padahal camera gua (Canon G9) ada tuh function2 begitunya..payah deh, percuma punya camera canggih kalau yg pegangnya gaptek kayak gue ya..jadi gua lagi harepin lu utk nerangin dng kata2 yg bisa dicerna oleh otak gua yg sdh mulai uzur nih tip2 utk taking a good shot..
Other than the type of camera, final touch-up is equally important I think. I compare pics I took long ago before I know how to use photoshop (shallow knowledge though), they look so dull and lifeless.
Anyway, Leonny you do have a talent in photo taking I think! I learn to position my camera at ant level/kid’s level from looking at your blog pics 🙂

Speaking of photos, how or where do you store your photos? I love taking photos of my kids too, but my problem is where to store them (they’re just sitting in hard drive at the moment) and how to organise them. I’m afraid to lose the photos too in the distant future, so what do you think is the best way to archive them for easy and safe access?
