Brie : Chewing on Everything (and ‘Teething Jewellery’ by Gumigem)

17 December 201211 Comments

Okay. Here’s my case.

Brie is turning 19 months this week, and yes, she’s cute and all.

BUT.

By now she *still* chews on everything!

Sides of books, pencil tips, crayons, LEGO bricks, you name it.

(At times, it feels like I have a ‘little mouse’)

And oh, sometimes I’d discover stuff in her mouth too (like, … coins! *yuck*)

I remember Anya and Vai also had their ‘chewing on stuff’ days. But, all of it kind of stopped before they turned 18 months leh.

(Any of your kids go through similar ‘chewing-on-everything’ phase?)

[I often wonder, why oh why she’d chew on tasteless books when she has access to yummy snacks]

Anyway.

I browsed the internet and found some ‘answers’ to WHY toddlers put things into their mouths or chew on stuff.

> TASTE is part of the process kids use to explore their surroundings.

> Sometimes, children put objects in their mouth in an effort to recapture the comfort they gained from sucking on a pacifier (or breastfeeding?)

TASTE is part of the process kids use to explore their surroundings

And here’s the advice I found:

> If your toddler starts to chew, simply remove the object and explain that she can play with it in her hands but not in her mouth. And, just make sure everything you offer to play with is kid-safe and not a choking hazard.

(We do this, btw. BUT, she’d still continue on chewing, and we keep on removing the object, telling her not to, and giving her something else to chew)

> Don’t punish your child for chewing, but do provide her with certain toys that are OK to gnaw. By age 3, your daughter can understand that it’s OK to chew on some things, but not on certain others.

(By three years old? I hope the phase will be over sooner)

Anyway.

Now I offer ‘safe to be chewed on’ stuff to Brie.

And just recently, talk about good timing, MamaLavie online shop sent me a Gumigem necklace! (The heart-shaped one!)

Of course, … guess who’s happy to chew on it? =)

As for me, well … at least now Brie has a safe teether (soft and flexible too!) that will not easily get ‘lost’ (when I wear it out and about).

AND, Brie gets to tug and play with it safely while breastfeeding =)

We love the Traditional Heart – Siren!!! It’s so pretty, bright and lovely. Baby Freya had just turn 4 months. She has just learnt to grab things and seems to wanna put everything into her little mouth! I’m sure lil Freya will be fascinated with this beautiful teether necklace and have lots of fun chewing in it. Gnom gnom gnom… We live in Singapore.

it will be perfect for my baby boy since now at 1 year old, he loves to bite and chew, but not to fond to chew his teether. his little ball already got a bite like iphone logo 🙂

Oops. My comment was entered before I finished it. This good teething alternative will come in useful on days when my DS2 feels like biting/gnawing (he is already 20 month old and still has such days expecially when he gets frustrated, so I feel for you, Lenny!). It will also be a good stand-by since my DS3 is due any time and he will certainly hit the teething phase in the near future!

      Thanks!

a)I love the Miller Heart Gumigem design, it doesn’t look like a teether at all. Stylish for mommy and yummy for baby, what a combo. =)
I’m currently expecting a 2nd baby boy and if he’s anything like his brother, he will be another chewing machine. This gumigem will definitely be useful for him to chew and I can have a peace of mind knowing that he’s chewing on something safe and toxic free.

    b) Singapore

    Tags Marine, please?

My little boy is turning 7months this Dec 26 and it’s the teething stage. He’s been drooling a lot and chewing on almost anything…except his teether. I’d even put his teether in the freezer, he’d chew on them for a few seconds and drops them on the floor. I have to keep on washing his teether so he has something clean to chew on. With these necklace teether, he’ll have something handy to chew on and not to mention, he can’t drop it on the floor, thus, no need for me to keep on washing it. 🙂 Not to mention, It would look good on him, dual purpose, necklace and teether in one.

    We’re from Singapore!

    Bubbabangles please!! = >

My 9 mth old boy chews on anything and everything except his teething toys..nt sure why though..thought this would be a great safe addition to his ‘chewing’ stuff..And also fabulous for the mom to wear during outings

  • Sofia's Mummy says:

I would like a Chilli Pepper Miller Heart.

A Gumigem will be perfect and extremely useful for my little Sofia. She is 14 months now and she chews on everything. Put it this way – her books are very well ‘digested’. With a georgeous Gumigem, she will have something safe for her to chew, on the go! I will have peace of mind as well!
