“Thanks” to today’s gadgets, more and more kids tend to say, “I don’t know what I’m good at. I don’t know what I like. I’m not interested in anything actually.” (But somehow they are interested …

Getting kids a haircut

9 October 20089 Comments

Our little guy just recently had a haircut at a nearby home saloon, and I must say I’m glad it all went without much horrific screaming and kicking.

You see, he had his very first haircut in March this year, and it went pretty okay (read: we managed to go through it all with minimum screaming from him but maximum ‘distract-the-kid’ efforts from me!)

But somehow after that one occasion, he’d completely go mad whenever we take him for a haircut.

He’d cry and scream to the max and jerk and throw himself everywhere! It was bad. Really bad. And we had to cancel a few of his haircut appointments too because of his total rejection towards ‘people with hair clippers and scissors in their hands’ being too close to him.

I slowly found out that he actually hates the prickly feeling of getting bits of hair on his skin.

And so the other day, he sat on my lap, and both Vai and I wore the ‘covers’. I continuously talked and told him stories while he cringed and gave me ‘worried looks’. At some points he was a bit restless and he did complain towards the end, telling me ‘Udah… udah!’ (Indo for ‘done … done!’).

It’s good enough that he didn’t scream nor kick a big fuss this time. I guess the fact that he’s now more familiar with the home saloon and the friendly lady’s face really helps.

[And one of the best things of it all, the haircut only costs us THREE dollars!]

I do wonder though, are your kids afraid of getting their hair cut by other people? Any tips? I know of some friends’ kids who can sit still throughout! What a blessing! Hope to hear from some of you!

    Hi Tin!

    Thanks for sharing!

Perhaps having sharp things so near to their head and face just scares them, huh?

Vai was okay if I cut his hair (I did it in the bathroom, and he’d be playing with his toys while I tried to cut his hair), but since I’m yet to know how to use a shaver, when he turned 1.5yo I started bringing him to a nearby home saloon! ๐Ÿ™‚

Let me know how it goes when you take him to a barber ya! ๐Ÿ™‚ Fingers crossed!

  • Tin says:

Ha, talking about cutting hair – I have never attempted to bring my toddler son to a barber. He already avoided my scissors and haircut when I do it for him at home, so let alone bringing him to a stranger… sigh! It was really bad.

So I have to cut his hair myself and innovate around his hair cutting biz. This is what I came up with:

But think I also couldn’t take this anymore. Cutting his hair at home is too troublesome. I have to bring him to a barber soon! Wish me luck!

Hi everyone! Thanks heaps for sharing your experience with the kids for me and other readers to learn from!

    Siska:

Somehow I find with girls, it’s ‘easier’ to cut their hair ourselves ๐Ÿ™‚ Real soon you’ll try and cut JL’s hair yourself!

    Thanks for info, cakey!

I agree, having a ‘patient’ hairdresser who ‘understands’ kids is very important! In the end, I think kids naturally feel more comfortable too getting their hair cut by such people.

    Samantha:

Ah hah! You’re the lucky few then!! ๐Ÿ™‚
(The home saloon info is emailed to you)

    Mimi & Ethan:

That’s the beauty of home saloons, isn’t it? The fee is very very affordable!! Thanks for sharing!

    ……………………………………………………………………………….

    4malmal:

Ya, and I thought I paid her $4 just earlier this year! while everything else goes up, her fee goes down? I just gave her a $5 note, and she gave me a $2 change!

    Christine:

I really really wish I can use a hair clipper / shaver, then I’ll do it myself. The last time I borrowed my friend’s shaver and tried using it, I did it wrongly and accidentally made a subtle ‘bald patch’!! ๐Ÿ™

Before march this year, I’ve been cutting Vai’s hair too (with scissors). The kids will play with toys in our bathroom while I cut their hair. I still cut Anya’s hair, just somehow I prefer the ‘shaven’ look on Vai ๐Ÿ™‚

Gotta learn how to use a shaver!

  • Christine says:

    Hi Leonny,

I’ve invested in a hair shaver and some hair dresser’s scissors. I’ve cut my boys’ hair since the day they were born. I find cutting their hair in the toilet before they shower helps. Let them play with the water and some toys to get them distracted. If they feel the itch of the fallen hair, you can wash it away immediately. This save my time of picking up all the tiny hair from their clothes as well as clearing the mess after the haircut.

  • 4malmal says:

WOW i m surprise u can find a $3 hair cut in spore! My son doesn’t like the barber’s shaver and he refused to visit hair dresser when he was young. I had no choice but to cut his hair myself. I have yet bring him to a barber, but the last time we were in spore, I managed to convince him to have his hair cut by a hair dresser using scissors.

  • Mimi & Ethan says:

Ethan has his very 1st hair cut when he’s 7mths-old, all of us went to home salon; Ah Eng’s house juz 2 blocks away from my block.

His 1st visit, Sam (my hubby) had his hair cut first then I was carrying him showing him how hair cut is then after Sam finishes his, he carry him on his lap !

Ethan’s 2nd visit was all by himself as he recognise the Ikea’s stools whereby Ah Eng put onto the revolving chair….. Ethan cut his hair every 2-3months……he helped himself with the Ikea stools, climbed onto the chair … with ” 2pcs of Art & Craft plastic covers” he wore every hair cut visits …… there must be airplanes flew passed Ah Eng’s house balcony then Ethan can sit still thru out the session w/out moving around.

Ah Eng cannot use another more high-tech shaver coz’ the sound Ethan hates alot each time when turn on ! Ah Eng bought this shaver as she has lotsa of babies’ hair cut by her and she doesn’t want to share it with adults – just strictly for babies and kids ONLY !

    Ethan’s hair cut S$ 4 w/out washing. Adults hair cut S$ 7 w/out washing.

  • Samantha says:

Cayden is very cool when come to haircut;) So I didn’t have problem distracting him cos he will sit still to get his hair done. Despite the scissor sound dosen’t really appeal him. Meanwhile where’s the salon, S$3 is cheap man.

  • cakey says:

i recommend this guy from the junior league at suntec city.

he’s the best kid hairdresser ive ever met.

the thing w him is tt he’s not in a hurry to get the job done in order to earn more bucks (and tt perhaps explain the long waiting time).

he’ll stop when the kids fuss, tease and play w them till they’re happy and continue and repeat.

  • Siska says:

i’ll let you know when JL finally will have her first hair cut. but i think she’ll be very excited if she finally can have a hair cut, cos everytime she saw Damien had his hair cut, she always said, “Boo boo juga mau potong rambut” at home, she’ll ask me to pretend cutting her hair. so i did and when i said, finished. she wasn’t happy, and asked me to cut it again.
