Do you shoot with a pocket / compact camera or DSLR?
If you’re using compact camera, you can’t get this effect (called ‘depth of field’, where as you said, the object is sharp, but the background is blurred). This look can be done when you use DSLR, with the right aperture and lens.
If you’re using compact camera (like my Canon Powershot S90 which I mainly use day to day), you can get this kinda look when you use the ‘macro’ function. But then you need to get close to the object (eg. focus on just the eyelashes of a baby).
