The labour day - ANYA

And this is how it all happened.

9.50am

Estimated delivery date: March 19th and I was into my 38th week.

It all began with an 'uncontrollable trickle', just when Wilson's about to leave for work! No contractions though.

Knowing that if I really was going to deliver today I wouldn't be able to wash my hair
for a few days, I quickly had a shower, some breakfast and took a taxi to Thomson Medical Centre. It was raining heavily that morning!

12.30pm
After the doctor said that I was 1.5cm dilated, I was asked to stay in the birth room
and wait till the contractions got stronger and stronger.

Wilson's allowed to stay with me in the same room! :D

1.00pm
To my relief, the birth room was not as cold and scary (with visible surgical equipments) as I imagined. The nurses there were friendly! And once I got into my 'hospital gown', they served me some yummy sandwich! :)

  3.00pm
Contractions started to come every 5 minutes, but the pain was still 'bearable'.

5.30pm
Contractions were much stronger and I knew that if I had no pain relief, I'd have no energy left when it's time to push. So the nurse gave me some kind of an injection (to relax my muscle a bit) and laughing gas. The gas was supposed to make me feel 'light-headed' everytime I used the mask.

But honestly it didn't really make me 'fly'! So this is what I did: I closed my eyes (by that time, there's absolutely no mood to talk anyway), told myself that the gas worked and concentrated on overcoming the 'waves of pain'. It worked! Well, kind of. The pain got more 'real' when it was nearly 9 - 10cm dilated. Anyway, this went on till after 9.45pm and then I was ready to push!

The pushing took quite some time because apparently the baby was BIG! It was a natural delivery with no epidural.

Looking back, I really had to say that I wouldn't be able to go through it all without God's strength. Really! It was tough and painful, and knowing myself (and my low pain threshold!) I really didn't think I could manage it all by myself.

This was also one of the reasons why both Wilson and I agreed on the name Anya for the baby, which means Grace, because everything is the way it is now because of God's grace alone.

  Lavinia Hidajat was born!

Born: Monday, 8 March 2004
Time: 10.50pm
Place: Thomson Medical Centre, Singapore

Weight: 3.970kg
Height: 51cm

We call her by the name of ANYA

Her name and its meanings:

Lavinia: Purified (Latin origin)
Anya: Grace (Slavic origin)

She's a true gift from God above, who's always given us grace and mercy. And we sure hope that as she grows, she increasingly is purified, day by day, and becomes a great blessing to others around.

Here's Anya, just 10 minutes old.

Anya stayed for an extra 2 days at the hospital, undergoing phototheraphy, as her jaundice level was quite high. We were happy to finally be able to take her home that Saturday morning.
