The Extended Arm Self Portrait

5 January 200915 Comments

I was browsing my old photos the other day when I came to realise how I have a habit of extending one arm and holding the camera towards myself when taking photos.

I have SO MANY of such shots.

As you can tell, I’m one who likes to treasure and keep memories of the time spent with friends and families. But when I shoot, I do like to be IN the picture too. At least in one or two.

Say for example, when my kids and I went on a Sentosa Luge ride, or when we visited a Nature Reserve Park, I could always take photos of just the kids while we’re there. BUT you see, I’d like my kids to remember – many years from that day – that I was WITH them too when they had fun! (and often, it’s either there’s no one else around at the time or it simply is more convenient and faster to just take the photos myself than ask someone else to take the photo FOR us)

[After trying out diving in Bali, and waterplay time at IMM shopping centre‘s outdoor playground]

I know a LOT of us actually have taken photos this way too, which I call ‘the Extending Arm Self Portrait’ way. Hehe.

And. Since it’s a whole new year, let’s start it with something that we can share together. Something fun.

And with that I’d like to announce to you a new Facebook Group called “The Extending Arm Self Portrait” which I just created, and everyone’s invited to join the group!

It’s a way of encouraging everyone to capture even more moments too – especially with their loved ones.

I’ve uploaded quite a few photos to get things started.

Can’t wait to see everyone’s different styles of ‘The Extending Arm Self Portrait’ shots!

Have fun everyone!

  • Howdy! I realize this is kind of off-topic however I needed
to ask. Does operating a well-established website like yours take a lot of work?
I’m completely new to operating a blog however I do write in my journal daily. I’d like to start
a blog so I can share my personal experience and thoughts online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of ideas or tips for new aspiring blog owners.
    Thankyou!

    Thanks for the tips!!

You reminded me, perhaps one of these days I should do a post sharing these tips, including those you’ve shared ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello hello!!

Di comment section ada yang share ttg ‘how to’ take ‘better’ photos the ‘extended arm self portrait’ way. dan mmg, kalo lens cameranya ga wide, sejauh2nya tgn kita udah di julurin ke depan dan kamera di adepin ke kita, ‘muka’ kita akan dominate the frame ๐Ÿ™‚

Experiment2 lagi deh .. dan baca juga komen/tips dari yang lainnya … hopefully helps! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve tried this technique for sometimes.. and finnally found the secret…

to increase “success ratio” in taking good picture with this technique are :

    1. Camera need to have FD – Face detection feature.. this help a lot when you do this extended arm pictures… because in many case, your face wont be in the middle of the frame / viewfinder. Most camera design to have default Auto Focus (AF) in the middle of frame… so if your face position isn’t at the picture and your camera don’t have FD feature, then the photo will goes out of focus / missed focus.

    2. Wide lens.. if your pocket camera has 28mm (36 mm film equiv) wide.. then the picture will be much better.. I have pocket camera that has 38mm not so wide angle.. and extended hand self potrait will take only my face with less or almost no space left for background.

    3. It’s recommended… if your camera has IS (Image Stabiizer) feature.. help reduce a lot of vibration when you take picture… better and more sharp photo…..

I hope this tips will help you guys in taking better picture with “extended arm self potrait”.. ^_^ *Good luck !!*

Hallo..wah, gua sdh lama nih ngga baca blog lu krn gua 2 mingguan ke S’pore & Thailand. Balik sini masih sibuk sama urusan kantor..baru hr ini baca2 deh..

Foto lu dng extended arm kok bisa keren2 ya? Gua waktu itu pernah nyoba tapi hasilnya sll aneh krn kayaknya 1 foto isinya muka gua doang & muka gua kalau di foto close up gitu kan kelihatan banget jeleknya..he..he..Makanya kalau lht org2 suka foto dng cara gitu malah gua yg bingung, kok mau ya? Knp ngga minta tlg org aja fotoin? Krn gua pikir backgroundnya tdk akan bisa kelihatan, tp kok foto2 lu bisa ya?

Anyway, next time gua mau coba lagi deh ๐Ÿ™‚

This technique I also picked up from your blog ๐Ÿ™‚ So I also have lots of extended arm pics!!!

Sis, hope what wilson shared helped a bit ya, in terms of taking self portrait using our pocket cameras.

Anyway, with this self portrait style, I think it’s common to take a few shots before we get the frame we’d like ๐Ÿ™‚ My face sometimes is ‘out of the frame’ too at times hehe …

    Sandra :

hehe … may be after joining the group, you’d slowly be a little more willing to be ‘in’ the pic too? … ๐Ÿ™‚

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………..

    Samantha :

Ya, same here … no one else is at home, so I take the photos myself hehe.

    Oh btw, upload pleaseee… ๐Ÿ™‚

    whojen :

Thank you for leaving a comment … glad you like the site too! ๐Ÿ™‚

    wilson :

Thanks for the tips!! Do share more often too please … ๐Ÿ™‚

    Claudia :

Time to get a wide lens then ? hehehe

  • I can never ever do it!

  • wilson says:

Just a tip.. some camera phones are equipped with small mirror at the back of your phone. If some of you wondering what that is, well.. thats for taking your picture without seeing the screen. Those wanting to buy new compact camera like Ixus counterparts, I would recommend highly to get one with wide angles lens – 28 or wider (smaller number). This will get you more angles to cover as well as capturing those landscape pictures.

  • whojen says:

i love the simplicity of your blog:D
    enjoyed reading it as well

  • Samantha says:

I joined the Group because I am like you. Always take picture with my extended arm. Nobody to help me take pictures.

  • sandra says:

hmm… i on the other hand don’t like being in the photos – so i simply am the one who takes them :p

  • Siska says:

nah ini dia…. ada tips-nya ga, Le? gimana cara posisi-in kameranya biar bisa bagus fotonya? seenggak2nya biar smua org yg mo dipoto, masuk ke potonya gitu loh, kaga kepotong. krn tiap kali coba, gw selalu kadang kepotong muka salah satu org, ato gw malah ga kepotret sama sekali. sampe kudu ulang berkali2.
