Breakfast : Meal Ideas, please

14 October 20118 Comments

Last month, I was invited to be one of the panelists on the Breakfast Forum, put together by Nestle Breakfast Cereals.

(It was an honour to join the other four panelists -from far left :
Ms Gladys  Wong, Chief Dietician and Senior Manager, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital,
Ms Annie Chow, President, Singapore Nutrition & Dietetics Association,
Mr Valerio Nannini, Managing Director, Nestlé Singapore,
and Mr Lim Soon Hock, Chairman, Centre for Fathering)

And I thought I should quickly share some interesting ‘breakfast-related’ results from a recent survey:

– More moms (this year) think that breakfast is a chore for them (compared to those surveyed in 2007)

– Getting children to wake up is most challenging for moms in general, especially for children 11-16.

– Getting children to finish breakfast is also another challenge, particularly among kids aged 6-10.

– On weekdays, kids generally have these for breakfast : Milk, Cereals, sliced bread, biscuits and egg.

As a mom of two school-going kids, I personally believe in the importance of having breakfast in the morning, especially before the kids go to school.

We’d generally have a combination of the following : Sliced bread with jam, whole grain cereals, milk, eggs, french toast, and sometimes they also want to have last night’s dinner leftovers! =)

Anyway, when it comes to breakfast and meal ideas, I thought it’ll be great to hear from other parents out there.

And so asked a question on my Facebook … and received many responses! Cool!

*Thanks to everyone who shared their mealtime ideas!*

I’ve listed out the shared ideas in the comment section of this post.

And, if YOU can share what you guys usually have for breakfast as well, it’ll super!!

Check out the comment section yeah!

Thanks all!

Haha my breakfast is not spectacular at all…

When i was back in Indonesia, my mom always made me & my siblings eat last night’s dinner leftovers for breakfast, so confirm chop got rice, meat and veggie for breakfast ^^

When I move to Singapore, in sec sch and JC I ate anything the boarding sch provided for breakfast. Can be fried rice, sandwiches, hotdogs, eggs & baked beans, pao, pies, etc. Oh, plus coffee/milo so i won’t fall asleep in class. ^^

When I entered university and the hostel doesn’t provide meal anymore, I hv resorted to eating only a cereal bar as breakfast. Still plus coffee so i don’t fall asleep in lectures =P

Thank God I still hv breakfast, but what a miserable downgrade… T__T

hmmm, y most of them have eggs in the morning? my 3 kids ( 6yo, 5yo, 3yo) usually have bread with spread (nutella, jam), bread with ham n cheese. cereals with milk + yorgurt, fishball or char siew mee ( i wil buy before they awake), swiss roll + fruits / yorgurt. half cup of milk and fruits juice (usually they request)… maybe i should include hard boiled egg

      Hi Serena,

I usually serve eggs (though not ‘always’) because other than the protein factor, it’s also pretty easy to prepare =)

From hard boiled eggs, omellete, french toast, to sunny side up on a piece of bread topped with a slice of cheese and placed inside the oven for 5mins =)

also may be because I myself like eggs ? =)

btw, my child is 5yo. im not v sure if what he’s having every morning is too much or too little. but i guess it shld be alright.

  • bb says:

    OMG! There’re so many choices!

However, I’d stick to my usual choices for as long as I can esp since my child is not fussy and doesnt mind repetition.

    His breakfast consists of

compulsory 1) 1 cup of fresh milk

    and

compulsory 2) 1 half boiled egg (ever tried other ways of cooking eggs, this one is still the easiest and the one he preferred most)

    and

choice 1) 1 slice of wholemeal bread with
    a. cream cheese and nutella
    b. cream cheese and peanut butter
    c. melted cheese
    d. french toasted

    or

choice 2) whole grain cereals (abt once/twice a mth)

nowadays I add in a small amt of pine nuts/almonds/macadamia/walnuts.

occasionally, we’ll hv doughnuts, pancakes, but v seldom.

Here’s a compiled list of mealtime ideas, as shared on my Facebook on October 5th :

One of Anna’s (12) favorites for quite some time is a breakfast burrito. We use the frozen Chappatti’s, browned as per instructions. Scramble one egg and add some real bacon bits from a jar to the cooked eggs. Put eggs/bacon in the bread and add cheese if you like and maybe even Mexican salsa and roll it up. All sorts of variations can be made with this according to taste. Another is a toasted bagel with butter or can even fry an egg and add cheese to make a breakfast sandwich.

French toast is always a favorite and I make extra and put in the freezer to bring out later.

My kids (ages 6 and 4) eat instant oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, cereal w/ milk, or bread with Nutella spread on it.

One of mine (6) likes scrambled eggs, too

    Ning(8 yo)
    1. Grandola with choco milk
    2. Corn flakes w milk
    3. Lor Mai Kai
    4. Steamed buns
    5. Ham and cheese sandwich
    6. Quails eggs
    7. Kaya toast
    8. Swiss roll
    9. Eclairs

    Kai(5 yo)
    1. Quails egg
    2. Cheese sandwich
    3. Ham sandwich
    4. Sausages
    5. Steamed buns
    6. Eclairs
    7. Cheese and mushroom omelette

If it’s school holidays, the kids will hv the luxury of eating nasi lemak 😉

I eat rice+one dish, sometimes 2 half-boiled eggs, and sometimes Indomie

My 3yo is the fussiest eater ever… he usually has a cup of milk and a Kellogs Nutri-Grain bar.

Oh – this is on work/school days since we leave the house at 6.30am and he can eat in the car. On the weekend he’ll happily eat pancakes or waffles with bacon!!

Um…yogurt, Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Nutrigrain bars, and Pediasure. Jackson only wants bacon.

    And frozen waffles.

    Noodles!

Bread n nutella , cereal (koko crunch) or Macaroni soup, or porridge

My girls (age 3, 6 & 8) have been eating Nestle cornflakes mixed with Post Great Grains or Lowan Original Harvest muesli in fresh milk, haven’t got tired of it which is a good thing, haha! Coz we thought this is the best for them~~ 😀

    (Indonesian)
    Nasi uduk,nasi kuning,mi ayam,bubur,nasi goreng,roti ham,roti coklat,omelette sosis,kwetiau goreng,bacang,,,semua disiapin ϑäяΐ malam..jadi pagi ga gitu repot.(Mie,nasi,bihun goreng,,dagingnya disiapin ϑäяΐ malam , pagi tinggal olah aja)..

Poppy is 3 and is thankfully over *fingers crossed* her fussy-over-food stage. Her no-fail breakfasts are (she has a cup of milk upon waking, then breakfast):

    – Plain yoghurt+honey or peach or prune + peanut butter wholemeal toast
    – Fruit + toast
    – Hardboiled egg + yoghurt
    – Whole-Ohs + yoghurt or cheese
    – Cheese + toast
    – Scrambled egg
    – Home made pancakes (but only on weekends cos they are quite time consuming!)
    – Home made muffins
    – Or a cereal bar on the way to playschool if we’re really late

    If we eat out:
    – Bee tai mak + veg (plain, no fish balls etc)
    – Fish porridge

    (Indonesian)

roti tawar, susu, telor ceplok, havermut, nasi uduk, nasi kuning, lontong sayur, mie ayam, nasi tim

My boys have some bread, with kaya & butter & Milo. Or some sausages & eggs… Or some peanut butter & bread…

Pediasure 1 bottle (200ml), because it’s too rushed in the morning, not enough time to prepare breakfast unless it’s the weekend.

YuRi 4yr 8mth has either toasted bread with nutella, boiled egg, poached egg with toasted bread, or oatmeal. And drinks with milk with either one of the above, except oatmeal since milk is used to make the oatmeal.

    (Indonesian)
Ubi kukus, pisang kukus, labu kuning kukus sebagai pengganti roti. Fresh orange juice.

We have half-boiled eggs on alternate weekdays, other days – toasted bread with jam, museli (or cereal) with soya milk (unsweeten). Weekends – bacon & eggs with bread & cheese or pancakes… holidays – then maybe french toast also…

    Cakes, bread, eggs or cornflakes.

    Weetabix mix with oatmeal

    For 3 yr old boy:
cornflakes with raisin or dried cherries; toast with cheese and kernels; steam siew-mai; plain porridge with raisin or dried cherries; fried mee-hoon or noodle; fried rice. He’s too picky with food, so I am also headache about it
