Vai: Why I’ve never liked haircuts

26 May 201010 Comments

Vai is four years old in 3 months time and he STILL doesn’t like getting his hair cut.

It’s not as bad as before, at least.

He doesn’t ‘reject’ the idea, but I can see how tense he gets and how he just can’t wait for the whole hair-cutting episode to be over.

He dislikes having prickly bits and pieces of hair on his neck and shoulder, and I almost always need to stand nearby to help and keep his head still.

(When he was one to two years old, he’d literally cry and scream, and try to escape the ‘scene’ with all his might! I wrote blog posts on this, click HERE and HERE)

Anyway, I’m sure he’s not the only one who dislikes getting his hair cut. And I’d like to hear about your kids, or other little ones you know.

Do they hate getting their hair cut?
What do you think are the reasons behind it?
How do you handle the situation?
Any tips to share?

  • I think they are scared of the razor or the barber. Kids are really picky with things and even with people. I usually cut my son’s hair at home. He likes it better than going to the barber shop.

    Thanks everyone for sharing!

The tips will sure be helpful to many other parents out there reading this ๐Ÿ™‚

As for the Baby Hair Trimmer by Panasonic, I googled it and here’s the photo (for those who perhaps are interested in getting this too ๐Ÿ™‚

For the past 2 years, Vai goes to a neighbour’s ‘home saloon’. He’s familiar with the lady, which is why he can ‘endure’ the whole process without much ‘stress’ (his first 2-3 trips there weren’t good).

I’d like to learn the basics of hair cutting for boys though ๐Ÿ™‚ Learning how to properly use the trimmers / shavers so I can cut Vai’s hair ๐Ÿ™‚ … Been cutting Anya’s hair ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, btw, … here’s on tip (if you’re cutting the kid’s hair in places OTHER than the bathroom):

apply lots of powders on the kid’s body. It makes the hair bits less prickly when they fall on the shoulders and body ๐Ÿ™‚

I cut my girl’s hair. Trick is, I cut her hair while she is taking her shower and let her play with her rubber duckies and toys ๐Ÿ™‚

Ethan LOVES hair cut ! U must be wondering WHY ??? Coz’ we ( 3 of us ) have our hair cut in Ah Eng’s house ( home-based young grandma hairstylist ! staying 2 blocks away from our house )

She turn her balcony into one-man show saloon which can see planes landing and take off ……. housing developers building houses ……. which can make Ethan to sit still through out !

Ethan has eczema so he will request me to call Ah Eng and arrange for haircut as he knows very well…….the eczema irrates him when hair grows long !

    Hi Leonny,

Last week I discovered the Panasonic Baby Hair Trimmer, and for the first time ever, my 3-year old Jake didn’t mind having his hair cut. It’s an amazing tool – safe, relatively quiet, and all the hair is collected in the tool, so it’s nearly prickle AND mess-free. U can check out my son’s before and after pix on my latest blog post.

    Cheers, Amanda

I think Cayden is the only one love haircut. He will remind his hair is long need to go for a cut. Haha…

  • Hann says:

    I hate haircuts too!

It used to be that Mummy will cut my hair while I have waterplay in the bathroom.
I’m quite ok with that cos the hair just fall off my naked body onto the floor hence not much prickly feeling and I get to play with water!

but now that her tummy’s really big, she sends me to my Grandfather’s maid for haircut. although she wraps a towel plus the professional salon apron around my neck but they don’t help at all.
Mummy thinks I’ll be better off w/o them.

now she’s considering sending me to those hairdressers who specialise in cutting children’s hair in hope that they will do a faster job. My grandfather’s maid takes almost an hour to cut my hair!

  • Siska says:

never cut JL’s hair cos her hair just takes toooooo long to grow. what you see is her hair since 3 months old when we shaved it off. we trimmed it a couple of times on her fringe so that it’s a little bit neater. but apart from that, as much as she LOOOOOVEEEESSS to get her hair cut, so far she’s never had it done. as for JH, shaved it off when he was 3mo. and never had hair cut since. his hair is thicker and growing faster than his jie’s one. but now is winter, so i thought i’ll keep it at whatever length it is, until summer, then i’ll cut it short.

  • Linda says:

Usually me or my mum will cut my kids hair ourselves. We do it in the bathroom, and give them something to occupy while we quickly get the job done.. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Gwen says:

    Yes.

I think it’s the prickly hair clippings. The heat and humidity in Singapore don’t help!
And stranger anxiety with the hairdresser is a factor too.

I cut my children’s hair myself. It doesn’t look fantastic but it’s free and they don’t fuss as much as they would at the hairdresser’s, so it’ll do.

What works for us…. – I put my son in the high chair and wrap two bibs – one in front and one around the back. I put toys on the tray to keep him occupied. But I have to cut fast else he will get restless quite soon and be wanting to get out!
