Perth Trip : Checking out Fremantle

28 March 20098 Comments

A must-see if you’re in Perth for a short stay.

Fremantle is known as Western Australia’s ‘other’ capital. Lots of shops, restaurants, cafes, fruit markets, souvenir and handmade stuff.

And if you head towards its Fishing Boat Harbour, you’ll find fresh seafood places, maritime museums and jetties (I love the jetties!).

We went there twice recently.

Once in the afternoon with my parents and grandparents to try out yummy fish and chips and seafood at Cicerello’s.

I was most amazed at their aquarium (said to be 22-meter long!). It’s right in the middle of the restaurant and when I went to the ladies, I could see MORE aquariums along the corridor too! The kids loved it! Stingrays, sharks, sea horses, starfish and lots more, all caught in Fremantle waters!

The second time we went there was at night time. To let the kids try out fishing!

Wilson used to go fishing with his friends the last time he was in Perth, but none of us are ‘pros’ (read: he’s okay but I am hopeless at it!).

We wanted the kids to experience what it’s like though (and Anya’s SO looking forward to it even before we left for Perth), and so we went to one of the harbours at 9.30pm.

While Wilson prepared the fishing rod and baits, I got the kids to finish up their milk (whenever we’re out and about, I prepared UHT milk for them, comes in packets of 200 – 250ml)

And hey what do you know. Once we got our bait in the waters, we caught two fishes! Hehe. Small ones, about 12cm long, all within 20 mins (we saw people not too far from us catching much much bigger fishes!). We released ours back into the waters, went home at 10.30pm and both kids dozed off immediately after.

I love how we could expose the kids to new learning experiences. And how we got to do stuff that we don’t normally do in Singapore.

How I thank God for the family. And for experience.

    Hi Linda,

How nice to hear you’re thinking of printing the Fremantle shot photo for your room!

Sure, we can email the larger sized photo to you.

I’ll email it to you over the weekend or latest by Monday ya ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve been looking for photos to print out, frame, and hang on the wall of my bedroom. My color scheme is green and blue, so the first picture you posted of the blue sky and boat is perfect for my room. Is it okay if you e-mailed me a larger size of that picture? I need at least 11×14 inches. In fact, the larger the better. Its original size would be okay too because I would resize it in Photoshop anyway. Please let me know, thanks!

    Jen :

So far somehow we just haven’t tried out fishing in Singapore.

Perhaps it’s because we feel bringing along the fishing stuff on public transports is too troublesome ?

Now that we brought back the fishing rod we got in Perth, … you never know … ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks … love the sky too!

About fishing, … on top of what I shared with Jen above, we also didn’t have any fishing rod (only until recently).

But now that you’ve shared places where we can try out fishing, … perhaps one day we’ll give it go ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hey Leonny,

I remember seeing a preschooler fish with his dad by the jetty in Nedlands, and he was so proud with his catch – 4 blowfishes! so cute! I’ve always wanted to take my boys ‘fishing’ just for the small thrill of it, just like that little boy I saw. Good that you took your kids to experience it…i’m sure they won’t forget it. Can’t you go fishing (just for fun w/ kids) with them in Singapore, like in East coast or in Sentosa’s beaches?

looks like such a wonderful family holiday!
